THE BETWAY ASHTON HEATH HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3) Permission was given for Yanifer (GB) to go early to post and for Moonshine (IRE) to wear a red hood to post.
Having reviewed the start, the Stewards were satisfied that Moonshine (IRE), ridden by Kieran Shoemark and trained by Ed Walker, had refused to race and was deemed to be a runner.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately ½ a furlong out involving Crimson Spirit (GB), placed second, ridden by Tom Marquand, the winner, Pellitory (GB), ridden by Daniel Tudhope and Christian David (IRE), placed third, ridden by Sean Levey.
The interference was found to be accidental as in the lead up to the incident Pellitory (GB) had hung left-handed away from Crimson Spirit (GB) prompting Tudhope to switch the whip through to his left hand to assist in straightening the gelding up, from which point his mount then edged slightly right-handed away from the whip firstly meeting with Crimson Spirit (GB) as a result of that runner also moving left-handed in his general direction before latterly carrying Crimson Spirit (GB) briefly off its intended line.
Whilst this was in the process of happening Christian David (IRE) down the outside had initially gone straight for Levey’s first two uses of the whip in his left-hand and after switching the whip through to his right-hand the horse had effectively stayed straight for the first use of the whip, however upon his next use of the whip Christian David (IRE) had shifted markedly left-handed with Levey reacting quickly by getting his whip hand back on the reins, but he had been unable to prevent his mount from colliding with the hindquarters of Crimson Spirit (GB) which had been carried slightly towards him, before Crimson Spirit (GB) then had its right-hind leg dragged down from behind when Christian David (IRE) clipped its heel whilst being checked by Levey which resulted in both runners being severely hampered.
The winner Pellitory (GB), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Goodwood on 29 July 2026 where the gelding finished sixteenth of twenty runners, beaten 8 ¾ lengths.
David O’Meara’s explanation that Pellitory (GB) had enjoyed the run of the race from a low draw in comparison to being caught wide from a wide draw in a more competitive handicap at Goodwood, was noted.
Pellitory (GB) was routine tested.
