Paddy said he took a good blow at the top of the hill but I knew he would, as he is only back in training seven weeks. He got one blow in the Curragh and my own new gallop at home is very good, but he said he'll improve a lot from it. He is a dream horse and he loves it. . I'd like to see Paddy staying on him for the year but T J (McDonald) might have different ideas. We'll see but I think the two of them have a bond and when a horse has a bond with a jockey, I'd love to keep it together. That's up to T J though. He has the Betvictor Champion Chase in Down Royal or the Charlie Hall in Wetherby next but it depends on the ground. Today's race will put him spot on and we're going wherever there is goodish ground. I know he is a 10 year old but I feel he is better and stronger this year and he has put a backside to himself now. he was beaten only 18 lengths in the Grand National and while I wondered whether he stayed the distance, hitting the third-last knowing the stuffing out of him. . Every race is an aim but why not try the Grand National again. He is a great people's horse and I met so many who were here to see Hewick today.

He jumped great, he was clever and shortened when he had to,. I was delighted with him the whole way and Jack was grand on him, he didn't panic at any stage and let him pop. He winged a couple of fences. I'd say he gave a heave going to the second last but then class just pulled him through. He winged the last. I think he's only about 70 or 75 percent fit so he's going to come on a lot from that. It was a lovely opportunity to start him off over fences. Where we go from here, I don't know yet but obviously our main aim is to try and get back to Cheltenham. We won't over-race him but we'll get some good races into him. He'll definitely face stiffer opposition through the winter but that was nice, a lovely experience for him and especially here at home next door to us. The ground is in absolutely fantastic conditions. It's lovely, a three-runner race at home, but I'm glad it's over with in one way. When you've a horse like this and he's your best horse, and he's owned by very good owners, you just want to get this out of the way and progress from here and see where he brings us. I was only looking at today and today's opportunity was lovely for him. He'll get another before he goes back to Cheltenham in November. I'd like to keep it local and keep him off the truck, keep the travelling limit. I'm not sure if there's a race here later in the month but if there is he'll more than likely come back here.

My horses were just arse-ways for six to 12 months, but hopefully have turned the corner now. I don't know what it was, but they just weren't finishing their races although some weren't any good. We had to clean out the whole place, changed water pots - did everything possible. Franciscan Rock had some good form and there were no slouches for today's four-horse race - any of the four could have won. He is qualified for the Pertemps (at Cheltenham), but a lot of water has to flow under the bridge first. I'll give him a break now.

It is his first run for five months and Darragh knows him very well having won a bumper and maiden hurdle on him. We couldn't look past him with his 7lb claim on that ground, which is worth its weight in gold. This horse was my first winner, he is still flying the flag and is a mighty horse. He isn't big, but is very well-bred and jumps hurdles very well. He pulled up in the Galway Hurdle when they went a million (speed) and we were behind and beaten after the first hurdle. He didn't really get a race though, but the thing about him is he can hit flat spots in his races. . He ran well when finishing fourth in the Red Mills Hurdle at Gowran last year and that is an option again. It is mighty for the five-member syndicate (Red Strand Syndicate) and there are a lot of happy people here, although two are at home with Covid, another is in Copenhagen and he couldn't make it. They are west Cork people and we had our initial syndicate meeting in the Red Strand (in Cork).

his Galway run was over two miles where his owners wanted a runner, and things went wrong having made mistakes. He just wasn’t right after the race so we gave him time and he is back to himself. There’s no doubt the further he goes, the better he is and while he also was in the three-mile hurdle earlier this week, I felt he had too much weight for a young horse. To be honest if I was Sam, I’d have followed Ballygunner Castle instead of him following us, and pushed him along. They went no gallop though and it was a no-race, really so that's why he is riding them. They quickened over the last two, but the one thing I do like about our horse, from the second-last to the line - even after the last - he dropped his head and showed a good attitude. We’ll go for the Albert Bartlett now. I think the race could suit him, and he could have an each-way chance in a race like that, with a lead, coming at a few horses.

He needs a bit of nicer ground and needs a trip. Looking at him today I think he needs a fence too, but I’ll wait until the new season comes in. We’ll find a nice hurdle race between now and the end of Punchestown (festival). Possibly something in Fairyhouse for him. He didn’t enjoy Mallow. He didn’t take Paul along at all, so we took the hood off him today and I think it made a big difference. He was always very free, but he’s changed now. He’s more mature and is settling in his races, so it makes him easier to ride. It probably wasn’t the highest standard of race either. He’s improving and maybe the ones around him aren’t. I was happy to get that and I think his future might lie over fences.

It was a good performance. It’s a great race to win, because Tommy Carberry was my hero when I was a young fella growing up,. He looked to be in control and he stretched out well to the line. He’s an improving horse and the blinkers certainly make a difference to him. He’s effective on that ground and it looks very necessary. He could go to Punchestown for the two-and-a-half mile opportunity race but it depends on ground. We’ll see how he is, there is no such thing as an easy race on very heavy ground. It’s always great to get a double, I think that’s the first one in my name,. We dropped him back to two and a half (miles) today knowing that he should get that. I was a bit surprised how easily he won it, taking on the horses he was taking on. He always had the ability. We’ll see where we got with him now and see what the handicapper does. He very seldom runs a bad race, he’s always running respectably,. That was his first time wearing cheekpieces over hurdles and I think that helped him out today. It probably wasn’t the strongest of races, we were considering whether to run him or not with the ground but he ran grand. He’s consistent but struggles a bit to get his head in front. Hopefully he’ll go on from there and he’ll keep tipping away in handicaps. I think once the ground isn’t too tacky he gets away with it. It’s definitely loose out there with the rain that came. Today's runner-up was having his first run over hurdles so he had the experience over him and jumps very well. That was brilliant. We just decided to change things around completely today. We thought he’d run well the last day in Navan. It was a decent run, but I thought he just raced way too lazily. I thought there wasn’t much pace in the race and that he was fit, so we’d try and ride him very prominent. Now I look clever, maybe I wasn’t too clever the last day. It’s great that it worked out really well. He jumped well and he raced lazily in front, so he kept getting breathers. We’re having a great run thankfully. I had an idea that I’d send him to the ladies race in Limerick over Christmas and go back to dropping him in a little bit, but after that I’m not quite sure. That’s great. He’s taken a step forward. He travelled brilliantly and jumped brilliantly and he was gutsy too. He met the second last on the wrong stride and lost a bit of momentum, but he was good and brave. He has surprised us, I thought for a long time he was going to struggle to ever win a race but here we are and he’s after going up a stone. He has enough size and scope to keep improving. He was running gassy early and going down the back Donagh was changing his hands a bit, and he said to me afterwards the horse took a blow and filled himself. He galloped away strong to the line. Shane Duffy had him previously and we had also found another one (a winner) from there as well, so took our opportunity when we could. I presumed the horse had been well - but wouldn't know, before I got him. His point-to-point win came on good and I'd say he is ground dependant. The horse picked up an injury in January, but we've had a clean run with him since. The first-time tongue-tie suited and, while he isn't the biggest, has size for summer fences. It is my first winner for Carl Slattery (owner) so it was important to get that.
