We were very, very disappointed after the first day. We went to Listowel thinking he'd win and we are still not sure what went wrong. It was very, very wet that day, it was over two and a half and he was quite keen for his first day at school. He didn't run that bad and if our expectations weren't so high we wouldn't have been disappointed. You kind of lose confidence then.

we’re delighted with him and we won this race last year with Answer To Kayf and, the year before, James Dullea (Rusheen's previous trainer) won it. James is involved with this horse and we got him from James so it’s a bit of a coincidence. All our horses were wrong over Christmas and this fella scoped wrong a few times and didn’t get to run so we’re were a bit disappointed. He did a couple of nice pieces of work a fortnight ago and was due to run in Thurles but gave himself an over-reach so we just had to take it easy for a few days to let him recover. We came here today really not knowing. I said to the lads that he was working well but I had never got him away and I wasn’t really sure. He’s a big horse, ground conditions suited and he jumped great. Phillip gave him a super ride. We got him in the autumn and I wasn’t really sure what to make of him but his work after Christmas definitely improved. He was on an ideal weight, bottom weight, on heavy ground. We’ll see what the handicapper does and keep him to these conditions. That was his first run in 10 months so you’d be hoping he’d improve a little bit.

He is a fine horse, he had two nice runs in maiden hurdles and came out of Limerick well,. I saw this race where he was getting allowances from bumper winners and while the other horse (morning favourite St Cuthberts Cave) came out, I was hopeful either way. We like him, he jumps great and Richie gave him a nice positive ride. He is fragile mentally so will let him learn his job. He is a novice until December so we'll see how he progresses and he could possibly jump fences next season.

you can never get the ground heavy enough for him and that was a big bonus today. It’s great to have a winner here on a big day at my local track. We ran him over 2m1f the last day which was too short and that’s his trip — 2m4f. When I saw the rain coming this week I was thrilled. He does the job for us each year, I don’t want the rain to stop for him but for the rest of the horses at home I want the rain to stop, so we can’t have it every way!

Rachael had been doing a great job and had the good sense to pull him up at Thurles when the ground was too quick but then I jocked her off! I’m delighted for James though who has been a good friend for years and gave him a great spin. I just felt that he needed the 7lb (claim) over the extended trip. we’ve always thought he was a nice horse and he just had a few niggly problems and our vet Amy Fitzgerald has done a lot of work with him. This horse is a real gent, I bought him off Aidan Fitzgerald, Tina Condon rides him out at home everyday and is a huge part of my team along with her daughter Ava. He’s a big boy so we’ll give a bit of time and pick something at Christmas.

I'm delighted for Leo McArdle who is from Castleblayney in Monaghan. He didn't travel down tonight but he has been really patient with her. He is a good, loyal owner and I'm delighted for him as he stuck by her. It was her first handicap chase tonight. She won a point-to-point well on debut and we thought that she was going to be a good lot smarter. She was second in a maiden hurdle but for some reason or another it just hasn't panned out the way we thought it would. She always threatened to do what she done this evening, but we don't have any reason why it's after taking so long. Thankfully she got her act together. Her dam was a good race mare and won eight times. She was an impressive winner of her point-to-point and Colin said he'd hold on to her, as he likes to race the odd good mare and that's what we thought she was going to be. Up until today she has been disappointing. It was a low grade race and in fairness the handicapper had given her a chance. There is no fancy plans, we will just try win another race with her. Maybe she will go back over hurdles and try to exploit her hurdles mark. She is rated something similar over hurdles but is probably a better chaser than she'll ever be a hurdler.

Charlie is a big fella so lucky to be riding at all due to his weight. When I got him to win his first bumper I thought that was my job done, as I thought he wouldn't be riding any further but he was bitten by the bug and keeps at it. Charlie likes hurling, plays indoor soccer and works hard at his weight. He gave that horse an exceptional ride as he took his time on her. She had a great run the last day when only beaten 14 lengths by Maughreen so we were hopeful coming back to a handicap, with the 7lb claim. She is well-bred, is out of a half-sister to Our Vic, is a very nice looking mare so I'm glad to get the winning bracket with her. The horses are going well and this mare could stretch to three miles.

Even if she had jumped the last better, she might have been closer as well, but I don't know how they stayed in contact at the second-last. He’s easy to train, does his own thing at home and performs very well for us on the track. The horse is growing up, he’s a big shell really, and I think there is more to come from him. He probably got an easy lead, but he acts well on that ground. Cal knows him very well and he says he jumps better when he’s up there. We went up to Down Royal thinking we were going to get a dig in the ground, but it was like summer good ground on the chase course and he just didn’t act on it. The plan was to try and find a handicap chase, but there wasn’t one so we said we’d come back for a handicap hurdle. He loves soft ground and I think he’d be better on the main track here as he’s such a big lad. I said to Tiernan to stay out wide, he is riding with unbelievable confidence. He’s a great guy and I’m very lucky he’s associated with us. John (Leckey) is a super owner, he’s a great supported and is with me for years. He never interferes, just let’s me tip away at it. He has a huge interest and is a great guy. I’m very lucky with the people I have around me.

It was a pity to run both horses against each other and we had planned in keeping them separately, but with so many meetings being called off it was a great result. We had a one-two previously in Ballinrobe and they are grand, solid, old mares who are healthy and well and will stay going as long as there is an ease in the ground. They'll either be put in foal this or next year. The winner is owed by Eddie Naughton who is a good supporter of ours and the mare is doing her job away at her level. Gary gave her a great spin.
