FormscanBy Eamonn Murphy - I remember being pretty disappointed after last year's renewal of this heat, after BENKEI just came up short behind Hazariban and Chill. That wasn't the first time I'd supported the Galileo gelding, and he still remains a maiden after twelve outings. However hopes must he high that a breakthrough is near, as Pat Smullen is up again, and he could now be 'fired up' on the back of a hurdles outing, at this venue three weeks back. Benkei has his second start now for the Harry Rogers yard, and the County Louth handler obviously liked the five-year-old, when buying him for 70,000 Euros back in October. He'll no doubt be hoping that his charge can strike now.
An extended handicap for four yrs old and upwards (70 = 10st)Penalties - (after calculation of the handicap) A winner shall carry 5lb extra; for each race won. Any horse rated above 70 shall initially be treated as having that rating and the highest weight allotted shall be 10st. Subsequently, the excess over 70 in any rating shall be added to the weight allotted to that horse. (For the purpose of this note, any four year old rated above 70 shall have the applicable weight for age allowance then prevailing deducted from the horse's rating prior to the original calculation of the handicap)
