Formscan By Tom Weekes - SUB LIEUTENANT might take all the beating having proven himself a smart performer at this grade. He won well at Down Royal in November and performed well when a close enough third in a Grade 1 contest at Punchestown in November. He wasn’t at his best when well held by Black Hercules (which fell at the final fence) at Navan last February but comfortably holds that rival on his most recent outing. Black Hercules himself a very smart Grade 1 winner but his two runs this term have been disappointing. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him improve gradually with every run but he still has plenty to prove and also gives away weight, albeit just 2lbs to the more fancied runners. Sizing John could have had a glorious career thus far were it not for the presence of Douvan and while he lacks a gear to be top class, steps back up to this trip today and also drops in class. He has obvious claims and should get involved. Smashing is himself capable but needs heavy ground to be at his best and has a lot to prove on recent form.
