Marnane’s Manton Bay books Cambridgeshire ticket
I’m tried of him finishing second but he is a very, very good horse who is a little bit idle. Luke just said he coasted up to go and win well today, but felt he had enough done. He isn’t in any way rogueish though. I left him in the Cambridgeshire (€100,000, Tote-sponsored) for next week and while we’ll mull it over, I’d say he will probably run. There has been a few offers in for him from Hong Kong so we’ll see what happens, but at the moment the plan is the Cambridgeshire.
First stakes winner for Thorne & Kearney
We were humming and hawing whether to run, as we wanted him to defend his Cambridgeshire title next weekend, . He won it last year, but would have to lump top weight now and there are smart three-year-olds coming up through the ranks, so we came here instead. He is a proper horse, won very well in Naas previously and at Royal Ascot, he was drawn on the wrong side. He was a very sick horse in the spring when we had him lined up for the Lincoln, and we are only getting to know him now. He is a fine big strapping horse who wouldn't look out of place in a Champion Chase, and he has thrived recently. It has been a quiet enough turf campaign for me, but he is putting me on the map. To get a stakes winner in my second season is special and without my assistant Stephen Mooney, I wouldn't have had the take-off I've had. We picked out Jack Kearney early on and he has delivered on many occasions for us, so I'm delighted for him. It's his first stakes winner too.
'Fancy-prices Flynn' bags another big win
I’ve realised that if I put Leigh Roche up, their prices just drift. He won on Nibras Rainbow here for me in May, at 33/1 and, with me training and Leigh riding, we get any prices!. We did fancy him, as he was sore after his Fairyhouse run and things didn’t go right before Galway when he missed a week, and was drawn wide. I felt he was a better horse today and couldn’t believe his price!. He had beaten all of these in Leopardstown and ran well afterwards, but obviously if you don’t back them they will drift. The owners backed him though, and they’re happy.
Gaoth Chuil finishes with a wet sail
I remember this used to be the Carling-sponsored Gold Cup back in the Tralee days, and it was a famous race to win,. I never even had a runner in it and when it was moved from Tralee, it just lost its buzz. . This is lovely though, and Micheal has been with me up-and-down with different horses since my father died in 1990. Aside from Micheal, I only have JP (McManus) and Mrs Moran's kids as owners nowadays, and he is a great fella. . She has €180,000 won in prize money and is a right little mare, but I made a mistake to go jumping fences with her. She jumps them, but doesn't take them on. . The ground in Galway was unraceable for Flat horses by the time she got to run, and in fairness to Chris Hayes, he looked after her. She could run in the November Handicap.
More Kerry success for the Hill family
Maguire & Swan duke it out in the last
He is a great little horse and has been very good to us,. He had a cracking run in the Galway Hurdle (fourth) when he was stopped in his run and was unlucky not to finish second, which was the difference of 50 grand!. We stuck him in the Cesarewitch and that's probably being ambitious, but he had to win to get in, so we'll see. If he gets into that, he'll probably run, although hurdling is his forte.
