THE RACE AND REST AT THE HOLIDAY INN MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 4) (DIV I) (GBB RACE) Rounding the first bend, Minerality (GB), unplaced, edged slightly left-handed briefly leaving the free running Rua Mor (IRE), unplaced, short of room on the rail.
After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Rua Mor (IRE), ridden by Jonny Peate and trained by Sam England which was allowed to find its feet early and raced in rear throughout, before being very conservatively handled from after leaving the back straight until inside 1½ furlongs out, where it stayed on nicely under hands and heels riding to finish fifth of nine runners, beaten 8½ lengths.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that an initial post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities, however upon second examination reported that Rua Mor (IRE) was between 1/5th and 2/5th lame, on its right fore-leg.
The rider stated his instructions were to take his time and seek to ensure Rua Mor (IRE) firstly obtained plenty of cover with a view to getting him relaxed, before hopefully being able to run on in the home straight and do his best.
Peate explained that from stall 4, he wanted to fold across in behind runners early and quickly obtain the cover he desired, as the gelding had been far too keen on its only previous start for the yard.
Peate indicated he had quickly been able to find the rail, however the slow early pace meant Rua Mor (IRE) pulled hard a fact he had reported at scales, particularly when lit up early by other runners either being upsides him or in close proximity.
Peate added that the muddling tempo continued, meaning the race developed into a sprint home and whilst he was not ideally positioned at the rear in this situation, he considered that bearing in mind Rua Mor (IRE) had refused to settle at any point prior, it would have been counter-productive to then immediately ask the gelding to start mounting his challenge from passing the 3 furlong marker.
Peate further added that being conscious of Rua Mor (IRE)’s exertions during the early and middle stages, he considered his best option was to conserve as much energy as possible and avoid going wide rounding the home bend.
Peate finalised by saying that the gelding did not quicken initially when placed under pressure having straightened for home, however the final furlong was the best part of his race and he felt that Rua Mor (IRE) would benefit from a stronger pace to assist in getting him to relax and may also appreciate a more galloping track.
The trainer’s representative stated that he was not aware of the trainer’s instructions, but he was satisfied on face value with the manner in which Peate had ridden the gelding.
Their explanations were noted, although England was fined £290 for failing to inform her representative of the rider’s instructions.
