THE ROY GRIMWOOD MEMORIAL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) Permission was given for If I Could Dream (GB) and Mayfair Market (GB) to wear a red hood to post.
Leaving the stalls, Smartanck (IRE), unplaced, shifted awkwardly left-handed giving a bump to Charming Doll (IRE), unplaced, which noticeably unbalanced that runner but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Leaving the stalls, Karakula Dancer (GB), unplaced, jumped right-handed at the same time as Alkumatic Jo Jo (IRE), placed fifth, jumped slightly left-handed resulting in Horwich (GB), unplaced, being crowded for room and losing its early position but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Alkumatic Jo Jo (IRE).
Rounding the first bend, a free running Espanita (IRE), unplaced, had to take back off of the heels of Mayfair Market (GB), unplaced, shifting right-handed as a result and giving a bump to Lux Aeterna (GB), unplaced.
This caused Karakula Dancer (GB), unplaced, which was following to clip the heels of Espanita (IRE) and in turn hampered Charming Doll (IRE), unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race from approaching one furlong out involving the winner, Suggy (GB), ridden by Jason Watson and Stella Lucente (IRE), placed second, ridden by George Wood.
The Stewards considered that the interference had not improved Suggy (GB)’s placing, as although it was of a sustained nature, Suggy (GB) had appeared to get the upper hand after turning in, improving to the point of getting ¾ length up on Stella Lucente (IRE), before Wood then had to take a momentary check when Suggy (GB) continued to hang onto the rail.
The winning distance was 2 ¼ lengths but in making their decision, the Stewards put more weight on what happened in the lead up to Wood taking the check.
The Stewards found the interference to be accidental, as Watson took both timely and sufficient steps up the home straight in an attempt to prevent his mount from hanging left- handed.
