THE SUN RACING THE FAVOURITE PULLOUT EVERY DAY HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 5) Permission was given for Jet Patrol (IRE), Lady Dapple Rose (IRE) and Mi Sueno (IRE) to wear a red hood to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Latin (IRE), ridden by Sean Bowen and trained by Olly Murphy, which was ridden tenderly in the home straight to finish seventh of twelve finishers, beaten by 16 ¼ lengths.
Bowen and the Trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer examined the gelding during routine testing and reported that Latin (IRE) finished slightly lame on its right-fore and lost its right-fore shoe.
The rider stated that his instructions were to get him settled as the gelding is very keen at home, and as this was the first run for the Murphy yard having previously raced freely for his previous connections.
Bowen explained that he dropped Latin (IRE) to the rear of the field in attempt to get him settled and ride the race as it unfolded.
Bowen added that although he had obtained cover, he felt the gelding was over-racing despite his efforts to settle Latin (IRE).
He added that after jumping the last down the back straight he felt he had improved too quickly when rounding the bend relatively wide before weakening beneath him and gave him the feeling that he had no more to give.
Bowen also pointed out that the mistake at the second last flight was the jump of a weakening horse and felt it was not necessary to resort to the use of his whip on a horse that had no more to give.
Murphy confirmed the instructions but stated that with the benefit of hindsight Latin (IRE) would have benefitted for being asked for his effort later and ridden with more cover for longer.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Jet Patrol (IRE), placed third, finished lame on its right-fore.
