THE SHELDRAKE TRAINING LIMITED 'TRAIN AN APPRENTICE' HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) (GBBPLUS RACE) Guesstimate (GB) wore earplugs which were removed at the start.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference inside the final furlong, involving the winner, Magical Merlot (GB), ridden by David Egan, and Empirical (IRE), placed second, ridden by Kieran Shoemark.
The Stewards considered that the interference had not improved the placing of Magical Merlot (GB) as although the gelding had drifted right-handed towards Empirical when hanging in the closing stages, moving it slightly off its intended line, Empirical lost no momentum and was able to continue with a challenging run.
The Stewards could not be satisfied that the ground lost by Empirical from the right-handed shift was more than the winning distance of half a length with Magical Merlot (GB) appearing to hold Empirical to the line.
The interference was found to be accidental as Magical Merlot (GB) hung right-handed when under pressure in the closing stages despite Egan’s best efforts.
Following the race, Tom Marquand reported that Guesstimate (GB), unplaced, ran too free.
