He was bought to be a Galway festival horse and it's not too often you come to Galway and a plan comes together. He had a lovely run at Ballinrobe on his first run back and we train our horses for here - it is relief more than anything!. He is owned by a great 10-member syndicate (Street Wise Syndicate) from all over Ireland and our syndicates are supporting us well so this is a lovely place to be. He is in again on Saturday so we'll see how he is but he will be a hurdler in time as well - that's the route he'll go.

Getaway Charlie was out of form but dropped down the grades and had cheekpieces on today. He seemed to be coming into form at home, he travelled and jumped everywhere, they went a good gallop early and that suited. He likes to be passing horses and everything worked out well. I probably got there a bit soon but I was going so easy I said I may as well keep going with him. It’s great to ride a winner for my father. That’s my 7lb claim gone as well and it’s great to do it for him. I’m at home three or four days a week and you can see all the hard work that goes into it. It’s hard to come by winners in Ireland so it’s mighty.

Hey Babbs was in season this morning, so we had to come with this one. She obviously won well here the last day, and she seems to enjoy it here. She ran in Sligo the other day and Ricky (Doyle) rode her and said she didn't even blow out a candle. I don't know, she's a tricky filly. That's my second track winner. I had my first on Winter Fog (April, 2021). His last two runs were disappointing, but we knew he was back in good form. He had a very good run at Limerick over Christmas. We ran him at Gowran then and we shouldn't have ran him on the heavy ground there. He scoped dirty after his run the last day. The lads riding him at home said he was flying. The trip was a bit sharp for him today, but he stayed on well up the hill. He's work at home has been very good.

Jerisk Star has had horrendous palate issues and he literally couldn’t breathe. A huge thank you to vet Hugh Dillon, at the Curragh, who mixed an old procedure with a new one and it seems to have helped him a bit anyway. Hugh is a ‘wind nerd’ and tricked around with a few things. It is has worked to a certain extent and I’m pleased to have some semblance of my good horse back. He had a good first run but struggled with his palate then, which is the bane of every trainer’s life unfortunately. I might go chasing with him pretty soon but we’ll see. It is just satisfying to get today out of the way for the work and effort you put into them. It is a family-owned horse and are the colours of my late Dad, before my mother (retired M.E.P. Avril Doyle) took them over, so it is a nice day.

We probably made too much use of him the last two days and didn’t think he got home both days, so we said we’d drop him out today,. They went plenty quick and it suited, he loved going through them. Sure he got there and he won, so we’re happy with that. We thought he needed to be handy the whole time and he didn’t. We said we’d take our time today, he travelled and they came back to him. The whole secret to Cahirdown Boy is to throw the reins at him, as it makes him settle: if you grab any hold of him, he will arrive at the second-last fence but his race will have been run. Once you throw the reins at him, he will settle. Sean did a marvellous job and while we weren't going to lead with (front-runner) Kilashee in the race, as long as the horse was relaxed he was going to come home well. That is why I wanted Sean to ride him. Sean Curran is a wonderful owner from Spiddle and has had three Kerry National winners for me. We go back a long way and while unfortunately he wasn't able to come today, his son Sean is here and will be more than happy to collect the trophy. Gaelic Des Chastys really loves quick ground but got away with it today.

That makes it a better day because it was horrendous until then!. I came in and an umbrella left the bookies and missed my head by an inch. I said ‘this is going to be a good day’ because it should have clocked me. Then one fell in the first, one got brought down in the third and then a horse, Quarry Rocco, slipped in the stable and was lame behind and I couldn’t run him. I was saying ‘what have I done wrong?’. That’s brilliant. The lads (Cluain Abhann Racing Syndicate) are great. The horse has been very solid. He ran a good race in Kilbeggan over a year ago but got an injury and we nursed him back. He ran a great race the last day and was super today. He had a lovely racing weight and handled a bit of an ease. We never got to run him on softer because he got an injury in the summer and then we brought him back again this summer. This is his first time that he’s got to run with an ease. I said to the lads that I thought he would appreciate it but I couldn’t be sure. He obviously did.

He has a great bunch of owners. It’s a partnership that I put together between a few guys I know and met. It’s their first winner as a partnership. I thought he’d run well in Clonmel, but I’d say he got away with murder at home over Christmas. He races a bit lazy and we figured that out in Clonmel the last day and changed his training regime a little bit. I think it’s made a big difference. Tiernan is a free 5lb and it’s great to have him on side. I hope he feels the same and it’s good to be part of our team. The team of staff that I have at home at the moment are second to none, I have the most amazing bunch of people around me and I’m very fortunate. Tiernan is fortunate to have them around him too, and him and I are in a good place. The horses have been running very consistently for four years. We mightn’t have a good horse, but the horses are running very consistently. We are trying to build and find a better type of horse and get our level of quality up a little bit. It’s a slow burner and hard work, but I feel that we are getting there.
