Formscan By Tom Weekes - CONSTITUTION RIVER finished third behind Item and Almaqam in last month’s International but might be able to turn form and win. A generally dependable and high-class performer, the selection landed the Eclipse in July from today’s rival A Boy Named Susie, who he has beaten thrice, and while well beaten at York, stumbled and became quite lit up in the early stages. He should do better if settling today. Soft ground was Item’s undoing in the English Derby but having narrowly beaten Almaqam at York, each horse should feature again. Hotazhell showed up well in plenty of Group 1s last year and indeed landed a top-level contest in Germany in July, beating Wimbledon Hawkeye into third.

Kieran was absolutely brilliant on him and has really got to know him. He is a horse who needs waking up and engaging, as he is so laid-back. I thought he gave him a peach of a ride. Fair play to the horse, as he hadn’t run for a long time and he dug deep. It is a sigh of relief too, as I have banged on about this horse for long enough now so it is great to finally do it. People were probably bored with me talking about him and not producing, so hopefully this is his year and we could aim high now. This is a seriously tough division and it won’t be easy wherever we go but he has bagged a big one now. That was nice, he's a nice colt,. He quickened up well, they went a good old gallop the whole way. He's tough and he'll probably just have one more run this year. He had to do it the hard way because he had to go and catch the pacemaker and then go away from him. Shane was thinking the other horse would come to him and take him along but it didn't and he had to go and commit. He'll go a mile, probably even this year. I don't think we'll go to the National Stakes, I'd say we'll wait for something over a mile in September.
