It has been a long time between wins but he tries hard and is ground dependent, so we were worried today. He is better on better ground as he breathes easier on it, and at least it was loose today as he cannot go on tacky ground,. The lads who work with him, Tommy Condon and Johnny Kirwan, couldn't see him being beaten as he was in great form and I thought, if he could get through the ground, that he would take a lot of beating. He is a bit daft, he spent all morning trying to kick the hind shoes off himself in the stable and we weren't able to clip him either, or anything like that. He is just very highly strung. His breeder Jim Nash, from Scarriff, is a wonderful owner and is very patient. we’re delighted with him and we won this race last year with Answer To Kayf and, the year before, James Dullea (Rusheen's previous trainer) won it. James is involved with this horse and we got him from James so it’s a bit of a coincidence. All our horses were wrong over Christmas and this fella scoped wrong a few times and didn’t get to run so we’re were a bit disappointed. He did a couple of nice pieces of work a fortnight ago and was due to run in Thurles but gave himself an over-reach so we just had to take it easy for a few days to let him recover. We came here today really not knowing. I said to the lads that he was working well but I had never got him away and I wasn’t really sure. He’s a big horse, ground conditions suited and he jumped great. Phillip gave him a super ride. We got him in the autumn and I wasn’t really sure what to make of him but his work after Christmas definitely improved. He was on an ideal weight, bottom weight, on heavy ground. We’ll see what the handicapper does and keep him to these conditions. He’s a big awkward oul divil, he has legs everywhere and at Down Royal the third-last and second-last were taken out and he missed the fourth-last. It then took him forever to get going. I only got the track licence in September and I got it really for Bigbraveboy, and one other horse. I just said we'd have a bit of sport. After a few runs in point-to-points, the monetary value might be gone in a horse but it doesn't mean you can't have plenty of sport with them afterwards. Going handicap chasing is a good second outlet. I won a point-to-point with him and he is a grand horse who just needs soft, soft ground. I thought we mightn't have conditions for him but he'll just gallop and stay. He is a brilliant leaper and JJ said that he is some spin.
