Formscan By Donal Murphy - A vintage renewal of the Festival feature, with the first two home in the Gold Cup renewing rivalries, while First Lieutenant, Rubi Ball, and some of last years best novices add further spice to the mix. The likeable SIR DES CHAMPS is the one I'm going to side with. He is as genuine as they come, and provided he is none the worse for his nasty fall at Punchestown recently, he should give a good account of himself. He finished a close up fourth to Tidal Bay in this race twelve months ago, and he ran a cracker in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March, where he found just Bobs Worth too good. He showed no ill effects after his Cheltenham exploits, as he won on his next start at the Punchestown Festival in April, before falling on his seasonal reappearance at Punchestown. Bobs Worth was very disappointing on his first start of the season at Haydock last month, and perhaps the Gold Cup took more out of him than the selection. RSA Chase winner Lord Windermeme is sure to come on plenty from his first start of the season in the Hennessy at Newbury, and a good performance can be expected from him. Paul Nicholls has enjoyed a fruitful first half to the season, and he sends over Unioniste. Nicholls has won three of the last six runnings of the Lexus, and Unioniste warrants the utmost respect after winning well on his last start at Aintree. First Lieutenant has been disappointing so far this season, and he will need to recapture his best form if he is to feature. Rubi Ball is an interesting contender, and the headline writers will have a field day if he manages to win with Ruby Walsh in the saddle. Foildubh, who beat Rubi Ball in a hurdle at Thurles last month, is unproven over the trip, but he has plenty of ability and it will be interesting to see how he fares.
