Formscan By Alan Magee - Colm Murphy can usually be relied upon to produce a handicap winner over the Christmas period, and EMPIRE OF DIRT is now pitched in to this competitive event after just a few runs over hurdles. The Westerner gelding appeared to be crying out for a trip when taking a two-mile Punchestown maiden back in October, and has taken on some serious novice company on both outings since. A mark of 127 is certainly not treated lightly by the handicapper but, with potential for improvement over this stamina test, he could be worth an interest. Vics Canvas scored in great style over a similar trip at Navan after which connections nominated this target. He’s gone up 12lb for that but Jamie Flynn claims a valuable 7lb to leave him on a reasonable weight. Miss Xian also relished three miles when value for a lot more than the winning margin at Fairyhouse last time, and is another for the shortlist in a typically competitive renewal.
An extended handicap hurdle for four yrs old and upwards (145 = 11st 10lb)Penalties - Winner of a hurdle race after calculation of the handicap to carry 4lb extra for each hurdle race won. Any horse rated above 145 shall initially be treated as having that rating and the highest weight allotted shall be 11st 10lb. Subsequently, the excess over 145 in any rating shall be added to the weight allotted to that horse. (For the purpose of this note, any four year old rated above 145 shall have the applicable weight for age allowance then prevailing deducted from the horse's rating prior to the original calculation of the handicap)
