Formscan  - Variety Act took a backward step after making a promising debut at Chelmsford and a tendency to hang has hindered his chance on both occasions. He is still one of the likelier winners, but COMIC HERO is preferred. Andrew Balding's charge went close in a couple of novice events on turf last season but was crying out for a step up in trip and, now afforded just that, he can break the maiden. Portman Blue must concede weight all round, but there were positive signs at Lingfield on his introduction.
