THE 13TH BARRY GURR MEMORIAL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) (DIV I) Permission was given for Poetic Jack (GB) to go early to post and for Molly Marine (IRE) to be mounted in the chute and go early to post wearing a red hood.
Having reviewed the start the Stewards were satisfied that Haziym (IRE) had refused to race and was deemed to be a runner.
Charlie Tucker, the rider of Little Miss Magic (IRE), drawn 8, was slow to remove the blindfold resulting in his horse being slow to start.
After being interviewed and shown recordings of the incident, Tucker’s explanation that he lost his grip on the blindfold on the first attempt before successfully removing it on the second attempt, was noted.
Being a 7Ib Claiming Apprentice, Tucker was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
The winner, Elvetham (IRE), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Newcastle on 27 March 2026 where the gelding finished seventh of nine runners, beaten by 6¾ lengths.
The representative of Conrad Allen’s explanation that the gelding benefited from the application of first-time blinkers on this occasion was noted.
Elvetham (IRE) was routine tested.
The performance of Poetic Jack (GB), which started favourite and finished unplaced, beaten by 8½ lengths, was considered.
Hollie Doyle reported that the gelding stopped quickly and the representative of Robert Cowell’s explanation that Poetic Jack (GB) ran too free was noted.
Following the race, William Carson reported that Southbank (IRE), placed second, ran too free.
