THE COPYBET PROUDLY BACKS UK HORSE RACING NOVICES' HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Arcon (GER), ridden by Luke Scott and trained by Jennie Candlish, which was held up at the rear of the field until after jumping the third last hurdle, when the gelding was asked for an effort under tender handling to finish sixth of ten runners, beaten by 37½ lengths.
The rider and the representative of Jennie Candlish were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer examined the gelding post-race during routine testing and had nothing to report.
The rider stated his instructions were to drop Arcon (GER) in to allow him to get into a rhythm and hopefully jump with more fluency having jumped erratically on its previous two runs over hurdles.
Scott explained that despite Arcon (GER) settling nicely, the gelding was still novicey at the first couple of hurdles and as a result found himself further detached than he had intended.
However, mindful that the front runner has a tendency to go hard in front and wanting his mount to finish out his race, he elected to allow Arcon (GER) time to find its rhythm and try to creep into the race and so was happy with his position at the back of the main bunch of runners rounding the bend after the winning post.
Thereafter Scott explained that the gelding made a mistake at the last flight in the back straight prompting him to give it a nudge along, to which the horse responded, gaining some ground whilst trying to keep the gelding balanced on the downhill.
Once in the home straight he began to ask Arcon (GER) for its effort but, having made a mistake at the second last hurdle Scott felt it best to hold the gelding together to negotiate the final flight and thereafter Arcon (GER) could only plug on at the same pace passing tiring horses and had, in his opinion, obtained the best possible placing.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and his satisfaction with the ride.
Their explanations were noted.
