He had been doing it at home but not in his point-to-points. It was brave to come here on his form but Darragh Allen rode him in work last week and said he won't be out of the first three, and he was right. It was a pity he couldn't ride him, as he had done everything with him, but is in Fairyhouse today. Cal gave him a might ride and I'm delighted to get it. He'll have a summer campaign now as he likes that ground and the owners, who are local in Rathcormac, are with me for years so I'm delighted for them.

In Listowel the first day he ran a bit keen and gassy. The second day he was much more professional. I'd say he found around here a bit tighter today. His jumping hasn't been brilliant, as was the case today. He is just a huge big unit, a big baby. I had spotted this race a while back, being part of the William Hill series and I sort of kept him in mind for it. It's nice when a plan works out. He has hugely supportive owners. Back at Christmas he wasn't 100% sound for a while and we couldn't really find what was wrong. I told the lads that he was just big and backward and to give me time with him, so they've been hugely patient. They are great owners, so it's great to get a winner for them.

I'm delighted with that. We ran him on the Flat just to give him something else to do while the ground was so hard during the summer. We didn't want to be running him over hurdles or fences on that ground. He enjoyed it and I think it sparked a bit of life into him. He jumped way better there today. He’s a horse that’s always had his own mind. As a young horse he didn’t handle the tough tacky ground - it might be a little bit dead there, but I’d say it might have suited him. The second horse (Kilbrin Rocco), of Eoin McCarthy’s, had a great run, but he might want it slightly better and I’d say we got our ground. He was out all winter and came in a bit poor. He got six or eight weeks of lunging and three weeks of riding and he ran a great race in Limerick. We were happy to be in the first three today. He minds a bit for himself and I’d say the main thing is to hunt around and let him enjoy himself.

He was just getting outpaced all year - even there, for a lot of it, he was outpaced. He's just an odd horse, he won't race up into the back of horses but, once he got him out wide, he picked up well. He's a quirky sort of a horse, but definitely the slow ground was a help. We'll go over hurdles with him; we will keep him on the go. He's had a couple of very good runs over hurdles as well, but I just wouldn't run him on too quick a ground over them. He'll tip away up to Christmas, Down Royal and those places. He's a fun horse - a grand, sound horse. The ground would be a big thing to him.

I really fancied this horse as his work at home has been exceptional. We bought him during the summer from Emma Lavelle's, left him off for a while and in the last few weeks his work had been really really good. I'd have been disappointed if he had been beaten. I told Sean to ride him with full confidence although he is such an experienced rider there wasn't much point in Eric McNamara telling Sean Flanagan how to ride in a handicap hurdle. I love this place, know a lot of people here and have friends here, so I'm getting a good kick out of this week.

The whole secret to Cahirdown Boy is to throw the reins at him, as it makes him settle: if you grab any hold of him, he will arrive at the second-last fence but his race will have been run. Once you throw the reins at him, he will settle. Sean did a marvellous job and while we weren't going to lead with (front-runner) Kilashee in the race, as long as the horse was relaxed he was going to come home well. That is why I wanted Sean to ride him. Sean Curran is a wonderful owner from Spiddle and has had three Kerry National winners for me. We go back a long way and while unfortunately he wasn't able to come today, his son Sean is here and will be more than happy to collect the trophy. Gaelic Des Chastys really loves quick ground but got away with it today.

our week from last year was never likely to be replicated and we have been hitting the cross-bar this week, so this is a relief. We had been a bit unlucky with a few of our runners but the horses have been running great. I tried running Gaelic Des Chastys over hurdles earlier this week as he is so much better ‘in’ over hurdles but he didn’t get in, so I ended up with three horses taking each other on in this race, which is a pity. Gaelic Des Chastys was unlucky at Roscommon (in August) when his jockey eased up and then he didn’t get 2m7f in Killarney. The syndicate is headed by publican Josh Sheahan from Askeaton and by God they’ll celebrate this.

That makes it a better day because it was horrendous until then!. I came in and an umbrella left the bookies and missed my head by an inch. I said ‘this is going to be a good day’ because it should have clocked me. Then one fell in the first, one got brought down in the third and then a horse, Quarry Rocco, slipped in the stable and was lame behind and I couldn’t run him. I was saying ‘what have I done wrong?’. That’s brilliant. The lads (Cluain Abhann Racing Syndicate) are great. The horse has been very solid. He ran a good race in Kilbeggan over a year ago but got an injury and we nursed him back. He ran a great race the last day and was super today. He had a lovely racing weight and handled a bit of an ease. We never got to run him on softer because he got an injury in the summer and then we brought him back again this summer. This is his first time that he’s got to run with an ease. I said to the lads that I thought he would appreciate it but I couldn’t be sure. He obviously did.

The ground probably went against him there, it turned up soft. That’s his ground and he’s all out to get three miles, two-and-a-half miles is probably his trip. He went to the front and parked the bus himself, he pricked his ears and jumped away and when they came to him he quickened. He switched off better the last day as we went more of a gallop.
