THE CELEBRATE WITH SPONSORSHIP AT SOUTHWELL RACECOURSE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) Permission was given for Taaklam (IRE) to go early to post, for Masai Angel (FR) to go early to post and to be led to the start and for Based (IRE) to wear a red hood to the start.
Taaklam (IRE), trained by Harriet Bethell, spread a plate prior to the race and was unable to be reshod.
As the trainer had not indicated at declaration stage that the gelding should be withdrawn in the event of losing a shoe, Taaklam (IRE) ran without its right-hind shoe, which it had spread, and its left- hind shoe which was removed by the farrier.
Approaching the 4 furlong marker, a free running Great Success (GB), unplaced, shifted right-handed, giving a bump to Soul Warrior (IRE), unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held to consider interference inside the final 2 furlongs involving, Harlequin Bay (GB), unplaced, ridden by Jack Garritty, Great Success (GB), unplaced, ridden by Kieran O’Neill and Based (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Cieren Fallon.
The interference was found to be accidental as Harlequin Bay (GB) stepped right-handed moving Great Success (GB) slightly off its intended racing line, at the same time that Based (IRE) was trying to improve into a narrowing gap causing that runner to become short of room against the rail and for its rider to take a check.
Following the race, Harry Russell reported that Masai Angel (FR), unplaced, was slowly away, Billy Loughnane reported that Surgeon Commander (IRE), unplaced, hung right-handed and Cieren Fallon reported that Based (IRE), unplaced, was denied a clear run approximately 2 furlongs out.
