THE SUN RACING PLATE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1) (PREMIER HANDICAP) (GBB RACE) Permission was given for Booster Bob (IRE), Jipcot (FR), Zurich (FR), and Grandeur D'ame (FR) to wear a red hood to post.
After an initial false start, the start was effected successfully on the second attempt.
However, having reviewed recordings of the false start, the Starters were satisfied that no riders should be reported for contravening the starting procedures.
An enquiry was held into the start of this race, in particular in reference to why one of the Advanced Flag Operators appeared to be slow to drop his flag and clear the track.
After hearing his evidence, a report was forwarded to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority for further consideration.
Jumping the first fence, Will The Wise (IRE), placed second, jumped sharply right-handed, badly hampering Downmexicoway (IRE), placed fourth, Guard Your Dreams (GB), which was brought down as a result, Zurich (FR), placed fifth, and Peaky Boy (IRE), unplaced, which in turn resulted in Riskintheground (IRE), unplaced, and Down Memory Lane (IRE), which was pulled up, being hampered behind, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Will The Wise (IRE).
Jumping the fourth last fence, Midnight It Is (GB), unplaced, and O’MOORE PARK (IRE), placed sixth, became briefly short of room after Peaky Boy (IRE), unplaced, made a bad mistake, which resulted in those horses improving into an insufficient gap into its inside, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Turning into the home straight, Western Zephyr (IRE), placed eighth, who was hanging right- handed, shifted right-handed, taking McLaurey (IRE), placed seventh, Downmexicoway (IRE), placed fourth, and Booster Bob (IRE), which later fell, off their intended lines, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Western Zephyr (IRE).
Following the race, Jack Kennedy reported that Down Memory Lane (IRE), which was pulled up, was hampered at the first fence and never travelled thereafter.
Shane Fenelon reported that Western Zephyr (IRE), placed eighth, hung badly right-handed; the Veterinary Officer further reported that the gelding finished lame on its right-fore.
Freddie Keighley reported that Yes Indeed (FR), which was pulled up, had stopped quickly; the Veterinary Officer examined the gelding post-race and reported Yes Indeed (FR) had a small wound on its left-fore pastern.
